Glow Goals After 40, Part 2: Calm the Chaos, Fuel the Glow
Because a glowing face starts with a calm nervous system.
Let’s talk about a glow-blocker that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime in skincare convos: cortisol.
This stress hormone isn’t just making you feel frazzled — it’s messing with your skin and your waistline. During perimenopause and menopause, our hormones are already doing the cha-cha. Add in chronically high cortisol and you’ve got the perfect storm for:
- Increased inflammation (hello, redness and puffiness)
- Dehydration and dullness
- Slower cell turnover = rougher texture
- Collagen breakdown = more visible lines
- Stubborn weight gain around the middle (ugh)
The truth? You can have the fanciest serum on your shelf, but if your nervous system is stuck in overdrive, your skin won’t thrive. ( trust me I’ve been dealing with all of this and it’s not fun)
Here’s how to glow from the inside out:
🧘♀️ Lower stress intentionally
Deep breathing, walks, journaling, prayer, whatever brings you down a notch — make it a daily non-negotiable. Even 5 minutes helps.
💧 Hydrate like you mean it
Your skin and hormones need water. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily if you can. Add minerals or electrolytes for bonus points.
🍳 Eat your protein
Balanced meals with protein help regulate blood sugar, which helps regulate cortisol. Less crashing = less stress on your system.
😴 Protect your sleep
Cortisol should be lowest at night — but if you’re wired at bedtime, it’s probably peaking when it shouldn’t. Try to wind down earlier and keep evenings tech-light and calm.
📵 Set boundaries with your phone + people
Cortisol spikes when we scroll chaos or say “yes” to things we resent. Protect your peace — your skin will thank you.
