You see it all the time.
You’re scrolling through Amazon and find a cute romper, jumpsuit, cover-up, or whatever. Then you look at the sizing and there it is:
“One size fits all.”
I’ve given in and bought those before. Even if I knew it probably wouldn’t work for me.
And guess what? I should have known better, because most of the they don’t. (live and learn I guess)
What looks great on one person may not work at all for someone else. We’re different heights, different shapes, and have different needs.
The more I think about it, the more I realize we accept personalization in almost every area of our lives. The way we take our burgers, the way we want our hair cut, colored, shaped, etc.
Even when we’re car shopping, we pick the make, model, color, features we want.
So why do we accept one-size-fits-all when it comes to certain other things? Like our skin care.
Let’s think about this for a minute.
No two people have the exact same skin. Some people struggle with dryness. Others deal with sensitivity. Some are focused on fine lines, while others are trying to calm redness or improve overall texture and tone.
What may work beautifully for one person may do absolutely nothing for the next.
Yet forever, most of us have been standing in front of store shelves trying to guess which product might be the right fit.
We’ll buy something because a friend loves it, because we saw a TikTok ad, or because the packaging is pretty. And sometimes we do get lucky and it works.
But more often than not, we just wind up with a cabinet or drawers full of products that really do nothing for us.
The more I learn about skincare, the more I appreciate the idea that maybe there isn’t one perfect product for everyone. Maybe the better approach is starting with the individual person and their unique needs. The needs of their skin, not their bestie, or some IG influencer who’s never had a blemish in her life.
After all, if we expect our coffee, our cars, and even our dinner orders to be made the way we want, why shouldn’t our skincare be that way too?
Maybe it’s time we stop guessing and start paying a little more attention to what our own skin is trying to tell us.
If you’re curious about what your skin might actually need, I’d love to help. My favorite tool for this is a personalized skin analysis that helps identify your skin’s unique concerns and can provide recommendations based on your results, and what your skin needs
